FLA100 American Sign Language I American Sign Language I is an introductory course to the language and culture of the Deaf community. This course introduces the basics of American Sign Language (ASL) and is designed for students who have little or no previous knowledge of ASL. This course focuses mainly on the fundamental elements of ASL. Emphasis is placed on the development of basic language structures such as expressive/ receptive skills, ASL questions, commands, and other simple sentence structures are introduced to develop rudimentary conversational skills in ASL. Basic Information about the Deaf Community and Deaf Culture will be introduced. The student will gain insight and knowledge on the connection between culture and language. ASL I will allow student to acquire a Novice receptive and productive language skills. The course instruction is conducted in ASL (without using spoken English) a significant part of the time.
